How strong is our coffee?

When talking about strength of coffee, different people mean different things. Some people consider a darker roasted coffee to be stronger, conversely others may consider a light roast coffee with lots of acidity strong. To keep things simple, when discussing strength, we purely mean the ratio of coffee to water. To increase the strength of a coffee then you should add more coffee to your brew method. This is almost like turning up the volume on the flavour. If you increase the strength of a coffee which is a dark roast with smoky bitterness, then you will increase the volume on those flavours. If you increase the strength of a light roast with loads of citrus acidity, then you increase those flavours.

The flavour compounds in a dark roasted coffee are more easily detected by our taste buds, so if tasting a dark roast coffee brewed with the same amount as a light roast, the flavours will be "stronger" than the light roast. If you are used to brewing a particular coffee, do not assume that you will need to use the same ratio of coffee to water for our coffee, you may need to use more coffee to make it the "strength" you like. The roast levels of our coffees vary from coffee to coffee, as we roast each depending on how we think will best complement the inherent flavour compounds within the coffee. You will probably end up using different quantities of coffee for each one you receive.

We consider the Roaster's Choice subscription to be an experience package. We want to encourage you to try coffees from all over the world and appreciate just how widely the flavour of coffee changes just by where it is grown in the world (it really is remarkable). We roast each coffee depending on how we think will best accentuate and balance the naturally occurring flavour compounds within the beans.

If you wish to have control over which coffees you receive, you can set up a standard subscription for a 250 gram, 500 gram or 1kg bag and you can select which coffee you would like to receive. That way you can log in a day or two before your despatch date and select a coffee you like the sound of, whether that is a current Single Origin offering or one of our Blends. If we are out of stock of a Single Origin on your despatch date, the system will select another coffee to send you instead of your preferred selection, you should receive an email the afternoon prior to your despatch day if this is going to happen.
